FAQ

  • Who pays the surcharge?

The donor does not pay a surcharge. If the donor donates $100, only $100 is taken out of their account and they get an income tax receipt for $100.  The revenue comes from the charity itself. We are paid by the charity to process, collect and provide an instant tax receipt to the donor.  From the $100 donated, $92.75 makes it to the charity.  In this case the entire administration cost for acquiring this transaction was only 7.25%.  The charities are looking at this system as an opportunity not only to reach out to more donors but to overall decrease their costs of accepting a donation.

  • Is this system connected to "every" charity in Canada?

This is connected to every charity in Canada. There are approximately 83,000 charities in Canada which can be donated to.  There are a handful, who have opted to not be part of this system and we respect their wishes.

  • How quickly do the funds get to the charity?

Charities that are registered with CanadaHelps.org with a direct deposit arrangement, will receive their funds weekly.  Those that are not and a cheque is sent by mail, will receive their funds on a monthly basis.

  • The 5 year agreement is a bit confusing. What if the kiosk was not well accepted by our patrons and we needed to get out of the program in the second year?

The agreement does give you the option to not have the unit in your location at any time.  Actually if the unit does not meet a certain breakpoint of donations we may pull the unit for you. The 5 years is to protect our system in your location so that we are covered for insurance and that you do not place another system in your location beside ours.

  • How secure is your system?

Security is handled from 4 standpoints.

    1. The security of the financial transaction is secured through Interac approved equipment using industry standard encryption which we have very little to do with and depend on Interac to approve the equipment.
    2. The security of the data being collected and stored by our kiosk and servers:
      1. At the kiosk, we are not storing any actual data, so if someone were able to hack through 3 firewalls in the system or in the event of kiosk theft, there is no donor information on the kiosk.
      2. The communications between the kiosk and web server is done via SSL encryption.  This is the same security used by financial institutions and online credit card transaction processors.
      3. All identifiable data stored on the web server, such as name, phone number, and address, is encrypted so in the unlikely event someone was able to hack into our secure servers and then into our secured databases that the information is useless as the data is encrypted.
      4. We only store the last 4 digits of the credit card or debit card for tracking purposes only.  Again this is of no use to anyone in this form.
    3. The security of the data being transferred and stored at the CanadaHelps web servers - They follow the same strict guidelines as we do as far as SSL encryption and providing for highly secure servers and databases.  They have been doing this for 7 years and have developed systems to ensure data safety.
    4. The security of the data being transferred from the location administration portal to our web servers. All communications are made via SSL encryption. All location users are provided their own username and password.

In the end, we understand the importance of data security and realize how devastating a leak of information could be to this service.  We are doing all that we can to protect the integrity of the data and our business.

  • We still have an older clientele, many who would be intimidated and may not use your product/service.

This product will be primarily used by those 70 to 75 and younger, those persons who have been accustomed to using debit and credit.  For those that are intimidated by the new system, they can choose to donate the way they feel most comfortable or a staff member (if available) may assist them through the process.

  • We have concerns about the charity not receiving the full donations being made.

Depending on the charity and their processes we are actually decreasing the cost of accepting a donation. Cost of data entry, banking, credit card processing fees, errors, bounced cheques, accounting and reconciliation, preparing and mailing an income tax receipt have all been eliminated. It stands to reason that the cost of the kiosk system is substantial and has to be covered by some means. The cost is carried by the charity and the charity realizes all the benefits of a complete and hassle free donation system.

  • The Board of Funeral Services, may want us to track the monies received, as, in essence the funeral home is accepting the money. As a result, we may be responsible to ensure the money goes to the charity requested.

On every screen we provide a link to the Terms of Use.  The Terms of Use provides full disclosure of the funding process and how much is being taken from the charity and who receives these funds.  It is in plain text and indicates who is collecting the funds and the funeral home is not part of this process and therefore is not responsible for the funds. By having this system in place you are able to provide this valuable service, yet remove yourself from the charitable process via a third party system.

  • What happens if there is a discrepancy?

A discrepancy, if possible, will be reported to us or CanadaHelps (the charity distributing the funds to the charity) and the issue will be fully investigated and reported to the donor.

  • If someone accidentally pushes an extra 0, and instead to $20 they are donating $200, how do they get their $180.00 back?

This is very difficult to do as we have 3 screens throughout the process where the amount must be confirmed prior to advancing to the donation stage.  The Terms of Use states "You agree that, like any tax-deductible charitable contribution, your donation is non-refundable and cannot be cancelled or returned once it has been completed."  The process of providing a refund is an extremely onerous process both from a regulatory standpoint as well as from the benefiting charity.  Asking for monies back after the funds have been disbursed is very difficult as you can well imagine.  We have put every measure possible to ensure that the donor is fully aware of the amount being donated and the fact that the donation is non-refundable which is clearly stated on the screen as part of the donation process.

  • Under the Board of Funeral Service, if we receive a commission of any sort, we are required to inform the public that we are receiving compensation.

You are not receiving a commission but reimbursement which you can opt out of if you so choose.  We then will cover the cost of paper and make sure you are fully stocked.
